Shut the Door to Distraction: The Blessing of Secret Communion with God


Be encouraged to seek God in intimate moments of secret prayer by Jesus' words in Matthew 6:5-6. Discover the blessings of shutting out distractions.

Scripture:

Matthew 6:5-6 (NIV) - "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."


In this familiar passage, Jesus draws a contrast between pretentious public prayers and the genuine, intimate prayers offered in secret. He invites us to shut the door to external attention and noise, creating space for our spirits to connect deeply with our heavenly Father.


Living Example: Consider instituting a daily quiet time, shutting out distractions to commune with God. As we pour out our hearts to Him in authentic and vulnerable ways, we are filled with His peace, strengthened for life's journey.


Christian Principle: Shutting the door to the clamor of life fosters an unhurried intimacy with God. When we devote focused time to be alone with Him, our relationship blossoms and our roots in Him grow deeper.


Prayer:

Father, we shut the door on hurry and distraction. Teach us daily communion with You in the secret place, where our souls are nourished. Reward our hearts with more of You. Help us to cherish and guard this precious time in Your presence. In Jesus' name, amen.
